I’m running for Salt Lake Country Chair because I want to rebuild the critical role of the county party; building the volunteer base and electing more Democrats.  Only by achieving these goals can we strengthen the party’s infrastructure and provide candidates the support they need to win elections. To build a volunteer army we must improve recruitment, retention and coordination.  I am committed to fundraising for the county party, donors will see their contributions positively impacting campaigns. My vision is to provide people concrete goals and action.  We show our base how much we value them and incentivize them to help us do the hard work ahead.  Since 2011 I have been involved with the redistricting process.  I believe solving the gerrymandering problem and removing the inherent conflict of interest from incumbents choosing their voters will result in more representative elections and a better democracy.  2017 is the year to take a ballot initiative for an independent redistricting commission to the people. Grassroots organization is the heart of our party. Knocking on doors, talking to people and gathering signatures for a referendum to repeal a law that gutted government transparency is how I became politically involved.  In 2016, I continued working in the trenches as a campaign manager for two legislative seats (Rep. Rebecca Chavez-Houck, HD 24 and Paul Schulte, HD 39) and one municipal race (Seraya Amirthalingam, Millcreek City).  I experienced firsthand how challenging it is for candidates to get volunteers. Let’s give everyone a clipboard, a signature packet, voter registration forms and let’s talk to our neighbors! I can’t do this without you.  Through hard work together for a common goal we can unite and energize our party. Help me build our county party, not just in 2017 but far into the future.

I have worked as an aide for Congressman Jim Matheson and have volunteered on several campaigns. I have served on the leadership boards of Young Democrats of Utah (YDU) and the Salt Lake County Hispanic Caucus. I want to build up our membership by expanding outreach and engagement in the community. I also want our candidates to receive the mentorship and support they need to win. Finally, I want to increase fundraising by growing our small donor base. I have the knowledge and experience to win elections. I look forward to earning your support as Chair of the Salt Lake County Democratic Party.

I am a Salt Lake County native, and currently live in West Valley City.I have been a county and state delegate since attending my first caucus meeting in 2004. During that time, I have volunteered to help candidates running for all sorts of offices, from city council to President of the United States. In 2016, I was honored to be elected to represent Utah Democrats as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.Caucus night 2016 was inspiring for me. After standing in line with my neighbors for 2 hours, a somehow still-smiling volunteer handed me a ballot and where I could cast my vote for Bernie Sanders. Likewise, in November, I again stood in line for 2 hours, this time to cast my vote for Hillary Clinton. If Democrats have any hope of winning the big elections, we must recognize that all politics is local. This means that we concentrate on getting more people elected to smaller offices including “non-partisan” races like city councils and school boards, and that begins with candidate recruitment. With seasoned office holders and candidates, not to mention seasoned campaign staff and volunteers, we won’t be trying to re-learn the wheel every campaign cycle. We also must remember that we will not win unless we are a big-tent party. A candidate that will win in Sugarhouse will not win in Herriman, and vice versa. We also need party rules that give everyone equal weight, whether they are newcomers or have been involved for decades.

I am a Muslim, Pakistani-American born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. I received both my bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from the University of Utah. My background is in international, forensics, and medical social work working as a mental health therapist in various roles. Most of my career thus far has focused on individuals who are suffering from depression, anxiety, grief and loss, and PTSD. I have held positions which have exposed me to many different cultures, personalities, and organizational structures. My eclectic experience and knowledge provides me with the necessary skills to lay a solid foundation which will allow me to draft rules that will help to reach out to individuals and communities who are marginalized. In addition to my professional career, I am very active in my community. I am currently working on getting my own organization off the ground known as Faeiza’s Initiative. The purpose of Faeiza’s Initiative is to strengthen individuals, communities, and nations who have experienced any form of oppression or adversity through facets such as education, mental health awareness and services. My purpose in joining the Salt Lake County Democratic Party is to build bridges between communities by beginning with dialogue that empowers and heals our minority populations and gives them back their voice. There is a significant lack of representation from our minority communities which is alarming considering how diverse Salt Lake County is. If we are able to engage different populations within Salt Lake County, we have a stronger chance of making the difference we are all fighting for and electing the candidates we believe will honor our voices. My extensive experience in engaging and organizing various communities makes me uniquely qualified to engage our dedicated grassroots volunteers who are a vital part of our parties success.

In 40 years of active participation in the Democratic Party, I have never observed such division between my "blue" brothers and sisters.  And, in my  15 years as the president of the IBEW local 650, trust me, I have seen some significant division.  8 years walking my district as both a delegate and precinct captain   has taught me that while we desperately need our principles, we also need to dig in and work hard!  "Ground up" work.  It's not sexy, but it's what brings the change we are seeking.  I offer 15 years as president of my IBEW local 650 labor union, 3 years experience as the local chairman of my IBEW local 650 union, 3 years community council action, 5 years safety captain for the Union Pacific railroad, 8 year membership in the labor caucus, 8 years as a delegate and precinct captain, 2 years with women's caucus, (because I love and believe in the strength of women), and 1 year in the progressive caucus. I am not new to the Democratic party, I am not new to my drive to impress "blue" values on our republican leadership, and I am not new to the hard work I know it will take.  Vote for me for Second Vice Chair of the Salt Lake County Democratic  party.  I am ready, willing and able to step up, and do the hard work necessary.

I have always had a passion for being a public servant, in my home county in California I worked as a student advisor for the board of supervisors and was developed my interest in government. I am a 35 year old mom of four, with a Bachelors degree in Anthropology from Utah State University and several years of local volunteer leadership experience. Some of these include six years as a community La Leche League leader, a WIC peer counselor, and I served on the board of the Utah Breastfeeding Coalition. Before having children, I was the program manager for an indigenous-run environmental justice non-profit organization called Shundahai Network. I attended the Utah State Democratic Convention, last year, as a precinct delegate from Murray, and the experience inspired me to continue to stay active in local politics. As a lifelong progressive, and one of the many who have been inspired by Bernie Sander's movement, I am looking forward to being more involved in local grassroots politics as well as gaining more leadership experience within the Democratic Party. I have the time and commitment to dedicate towards helping our party grow locally, as well as utilizing my cultural and applied anthropology experience. With a fresh pair of eyes, and as someone passionate about progressive politics, I believe I would be an asset to our party, and look forward to your support as Second Vice-Chair.

I am running for SL County Secretary because I want to help the party elect more Democrats. I feel I could help inspire young people become more engaged and involved. I recently re-established the Young Democratic Club at Salt Lake Community College, where I am a student. Being on campus and around other fellow students will help me introduce them to the party. In 2016, I was Celina Milner’s Campaign Manager - she ran in Senate District 6 (West Jordan/Taylorsville). Currently, I am the Fundraising Director of the Young Democrats of Utah Salt Lake County. I will put the values of the party and its people first. I want the party to be inclusive and I believe the party is stronger when we are more diverse and unified. I hope to earn your support and look forward to working with you if elected County Secretary.

Ellen Brady

I am a Utah Democrat who has long believed that the Democratic values of inclusion and compassion are also Utah’s values—a commitment the Salt Lake County party recognized when it gave me the Democratic Values Award in 2015. My journey began in 2007 when I realized it was not enough to be on the sidelines: if I wanted to see change, I needed to be involved. Accordingly, I became a Precinct Chair and then won election as Legislative District Chair (HD 46). In that role, I built a dedicated base of involved volunteers. I also spent many weekends in Colorado knocking on doors for both Obama campaigns; it was an honor to serve as his National Delegate in 2012. Professionally I am a recently retired physician who also has a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH). Most of my career focused on the planning and oversight of the clinical trials needed to gain FDA approval of new drugs. More recently, I provided ‘due diligence’ reports to clients who wished to invest in companies with promising new products. That background, with its emphasis on analysis and attention to detail, honed my ability to see the “big picture” and developed expertise in the planning and execution of complex projects. As Secretary to the Executive Committee, I pledge to put my "feet-on-the ground" experience, the talents honed in my professional life, and my newly-liberated time toward the election of more Democrats. I am committed to helping to build the Salt Lake County Democrats with diversity and inclusion. Only by returning to our roots as the “big tent” we will make inroads into Utah’s current system of one-party governance. I am confident that I can help in that effort. I only ask for the opportunity to do so and, accordingly, for your vote.

I first moved to Salt Lake County to attend the University of Utah and as a proud Ute, I graduated with a degree in business and later completed my MBA at Westminster College. My family and I have made our home here, among wonderful friends and the incredible people of Salt Lake. I believe deeply in the mission and objectives of the Democratic party in Utah and feel that they accurately represent true Utah values – inclusiveness, diversity, compassion, personal and community responsibility, dedication to helping neighbors, and celebrating all things that make each of us unique and essential to the fabric of our city.  My conviction in a progressive agenda that properly balances the needs of individuals with the needs of our community, creating opportunity and encouraging hope for all is why I wish to serve on the Salt Lake County Democratic Party Executive Committee. If every Utahn has the opportunity to fulfill his or her potential by drawing on their passion, talent, and experience, we are positioned, as a state, to be better and do better. I wish to utilize my own skills and proficiency in business management to continue to support both a progressive agenda and the people in our state. I hope you find that my education and years as executive director of a non-profit organization make me the ideal candidate to fulfill the position of treasurer. I also currently serve as board president of Advantage Services, which provides employment and support to people with barriers to employment, including the homeless, on the board of the Utah Health Care Institute, and have served on the boards of Utah Health and Human Rights and Repertory Dance Theatre. I currently advocate for state policy that protects disenfranchised Utahns on initiatives such as Medicaid expansion and Utah’s opioid crisis.

My career in charter schools has been drawing me closer towards the political realm. I am currently the controller at one of the most politically active charter schools in Utah. I watch the news revolve around politics and wonder, "what can I do?" So I have decided to search for any step I can take into the political realm, in the hopes that I can increase my familiarity and awareness in an attempt to contribute my part towards a more transparent, honest and effective government.
