Why hasn’t Aimee Winder Newton disavowed the GOP clerk nominee’s extremist views?

Yesterday we saw the shocking reporting by the Salt Lake Tribune which exposed disturbing communications from Goud Maragani denying the 2020 election, spreading anti-immigrant rhetoric, and other radical conspiracy theories. Someone who holds these dangerous and baseless beliefs cannot be trusted with the responsibility that comes with serving as the Salt Lake County Clerk.

Do the other Republican candidates on the ballot agree with Maragani’s extremist views?

In the 30 hours since the disturbing Telegram posts have been public, Salt Lake County Councilmember Aimee Winder Newton has publicly said nothing to distance herself from Maragani’s extremist views. Nothing. So we have to ask:

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that the 2020 election was stolen?

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Republican elected officials should refuse to work with Democrats?

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Democrats are “commies?”

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that the Democratic Party is “full of mental cases?”

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Democrats were “very involved with human and child trafficking?

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Democrats are cheaters willing to do anything to win?

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Utah’s mail-in voting system cannot be trusted?

  • Does Aimee Winder Newton agree that Jan. 6 insurrectionists should not be prosecuted?

That’s why on Friday morning, Salt Lake County Democratic Party Chair Eva Lopez sent Aimee Winder Newton a direct email asking if she stands by Maragani.

As of 12:00 pm, Aimee Winder Newton has not responded.

Why won’t Aimee Winder Newton simply disavow Goud Margani’s dangerous extremist views? Salt Lake County voters deserve to know whether Aimee Winder Newton and the entire GOP slate believes in Maragani’s conspiracy theories.
