HD 36 Special Election
The Democratic candidate for HD 36 withdrew their name from the race and we have a chance to elect a replacement.
Filing for this special election closed at 12:00pm on Friday, July 3rd 2026. The special election will be held on Saturday, July 18th at 2:00pm virtually over Zoom.
All Central Committee members who live in State House 36 will be eligible to vote in this election. The elected replacement for this seat will then be on the ballot in the November General Election as the Democratic candidate for Utah State House 36.
The only candidate to file for this seat was Blake Townsend.
Blake Townsend

Blake Townsend - is a local Utahn who has spent his life becoming more and more inspired by those who consistently and proactively advocate for the rights they believe in and for their community. He earned his degree in Political Science at Utah State University, where many of his classes were built around open forum discussions and building empathy for those needing help. In his career, he has become aware of the importance of advocating for oneself and for the rights of others! His career began in the dynamic environment of tech recruiting but has now transitioned into the nonprofit labor sector. He has spent the last 3 years traveling to all parts of the state, talking to Utahns about employment-related issues and hearing from working families about the issues they face.
Overall, he is a strong labor advocate, knows the affordability crisis must be addressed head-on, and is extremely worried about the current state of the Great Salt Lake.
