Making Waves Newsletter October 2023

Hello Democrats,

Greetings from the heart of civic responsibility! In this edition, let's amplify the essence of democracy through the dynamic duo: volunteering and voting. Our collective strength lies not just in the power of the ballot, but also in the tireless efforts of individuals who believe in the transformative force of community action. So, fellow advocates of progress, let's explore how our voices, both at the polls and in volunteer endeavors, can weave the fabric of a more inclusive and vibrant future.

Be a Voting Ambassador

We know YOU will vote. Don’t forget to remind your friends and family to vote! It’s time to Get Out the Vote!

Ballots for the general election arrive this week! Need to update your voter registration, or confirm your address? Want to learn which candidates will be on your ballot? Do you wish you knew where the closest drop box is to return your ballot? Click the links below to update your voter registration, read about candidates, and see all of Salt Lake County’s drop box locations.

Municipal Candidate Support

Normally, here is where we would shout out our upcoming events, but instead, we want to take this space and make a special ask.

24 Democrats are running against Republicans this year. Several of these races were decided by less than 100 votes in the last election. A single volunteer knocking on doors for 2-3 hours once a week between now and Election Day could be the difference in these races. With ballots dropping this week and Election Day less than 1 month away, this is our last chance to help these Democrats win. Will you sign up today to be that difference for these Democrats?

Not able to volunteer your time, but still want to help elect Democrats? Donate to our Municipal Candidate Texting Fund! Just like during the primary election, we are running a GOTV texting program to support our municipal candidates. We have a plan to send at least 65,000 text messages to strong Democrats in every contested race on the ballot this year.

Sending texts isn’t cheap though and we could use the help. We already raised over $1,300 for this program at our Halloween fundraiser, but that only covers less than half the cost. If everyone who reads this newsletter gave just $5, it would pay for the rest of the texting program and allow us to send an additional 45,000 texts reminding Democrats to vote. What can you do to help?

House District Chair Spotlight - HD 31 Verona Mauga!

1. What’s your favorite thing about your community? Community to me is commonality, it's shared values, shared spaces, tradition, culture and so much more. In my world everything begins and ends with community. If you look at who the helpers are, it's the community. It's the volunteers, delegates, precinct leaders, neighbors, friends and family. They are the ones who are doing the grassroots work, giving their time and love to create spaces that are safe for all of us. Community takes care of community, that's my favorite thing. 2. What is the one thing you would try to fix to make the world a better place? I would abolish the Electoral College. 3. What motivated you to become involved in the Democratic Party? I got involved in the Democratic Party because I want to see a better Utah. I want Utah to be a place that's safe for all people and all communities.

2024 Recruitment

We’re still recruiting candidates to run for local school board in 2024! We’ve found several strong candidates to run next year, but we need several more! If you know a parent, teacher, or education professional who wants to make a difference in their community, let us know! No prior campaign experience is necessary, and we’re here to provide all of the training and support needed! These are part-time, paid positions. We’re looking for candidates for these 11 school districts:

  • Canyons School Board 1, 3, 7

  • Granite School Board 4

  • Jordan School Board 1, 4, 5, 6

  • Murray School Board 1, 5

  • Salt Lake School Board 2

We’re also planning ahead for all of the 2024 County races. There are several county council seats and countywide positions coming up for election next cycle. If you know a Surveyor or Assessor who might be interested in running, please email us at: slcounty@slcountydems.com.

In Closing…

Alright, Democrats, as we wrap up this newsletter tighter than a mummy's bandages, let me leave you with a spooky thought: the scariest thing about Halloween isn't the ghosts, goblins, or even the possibility of running into your ex in a questionable costume. No, no. The real fright fest is not voting. That's right—scarier than a horror movie marathon without popcorn.

So, as you plan your Halloween shenanigans, remember: democracy isn't a trick; it's a treat. Exercise your right to vote, because the only thing we want haunting us is the ghost of civic regret. Now, go out there, be politically fearless, and may your ballots be as accurate as a witch's aim on a broomstick!

Stay spooky and politically savvy,

Chair Jade Velazquez
