Making Waves Newsletter November 2023

As we bid farewell to the whirlwind of the municipal election season, it's time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the victories that have fueled our shared commitment to progress.

In the aftermath of wins and losses, let us find comfort in the fact that our democracy is a dynamic force, shaped by the hands of the many. Each vote cast is a brushstroke painting the portrait of our shared values, aspirations, and dreams. While some battles may not have tipped in our favor, the strength of our democratic community lies in our resilience, our ability to learn, adapt, and continue the journey towards a more just and inclusive future.

Thank you to everyone who came out, showed up, gave time, donated money and worked hard to share our message of truth, justice, and opportunity for a brighter tomorrow.

Municipal Election Recap

A heartfelt thank you to all our dedicated candidates and volunteers for the unwavering commitment and hard work you poured into the recent election, shaping a collective effort that echoes the true spirit of democracy. Here’s a recap of all the hard work we put into voter turnout.

80,000+ texts sent

2,000+ calls made

100+ candidate events supported

31 Democrats elected

Thank you to everyone who volunteered with us to help elect Democrats this year. We greatly appreciate all of your support, especially the people calling us late into the night the day before Election Day. We couldn't have done it without you.

If you have feedback or ideas about what we can be doing differently or ways to improve, we’d love to hear from you or have you join us at an upcoming training! We have open spots on our Events, Fundraising, and Candidate Recruitment Committees as well as within the Caucuses.

HD Chair Spotlight - Mark Rothacher

1.  What’s your favorite thing about your community? I like that many of the voters in Murray and Holladay are educated and want the best for their communities. We also have excellent candidates and elected officials.

2.  What is the one thing you would try to fix to make the world a better place? Right-wing billionaires who use think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation, Club for Growth, and the American Enterprise Institute must be exposed. These think tanks generate talking points that are used by right-wing media and social media that the billionaires also fund. They use these talking points to get voters to fear Democrats, liberals, people of color, immigrants, LGBT people, and on and on. They use gerrymandering, voter suppression to win elections.

3.  What motivated you to become involved in the Democratic Party? I got heavily involved with the Democratic Party when I saw Barack Obama's presidential announcement speech in Springfield, IL in 2007. I would encourage everyone to watch it. Here is the link to it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdJ7Ad15WCA  It is still inspiring! Obama's goals of a fairer and more inclusive America are still important today. We cannot expect that all our candidates are as articulate as Barack Obama. We just need politicians who embrace a fairer and more inclusive society.

4. What keeps you going, Mark?

We must do all we can to elect Democrats at all levels of government. We must fight back against Republicans who are taking us toward an authoritarian government and undermining democratic processes. Our democracy is truly at stake. We must continually remind voters of this. Democrats must win the 2024 elections at all levels of government. We must make this happen! Please help get your friends and family involved in this effort!
